When a Pivotal Moment of Receiving a Communication happened, it opened a door of curiosity that would take me on a vast journey of discovery.
I remember so clearly the first time I heard a horse communicate with me. It was as if a person was talking in my ear except that the only beings present at the time were horses!! In 1996 I was volunteering at a barn in New Hampshire. The 7 horses in my care belonged to Dawn who was leasing the barn for her horse training and boarding business. Each morning I arrived to feed breakfast to the horses, turn them out in their paddocks for the day, and clean their stalls. My compensation as a volunteer was riding the horses in lessons or out on the trails.
Having cared for and ridden horses for decades, I had a natural affinity of ease, being able to connect easily and loving time sitting with them in their stalls. I was often asked to go to the arena and ride a horse who had just bucked off a student. I began to feel a more emotional connection and although a very shy, quiet child, I found my inner voice around the horses. Even though I was only a teenager it wasn’t long before I became known as the person to fix problematic horses. As I look back, I believe I was communicating with them telepathically, as a young person labeling a feeling or action that comes naturally wasn’t really on my radar.
That day feeding breakfast was about to change my world and open me to a pathway that has been expanding ever since. I was pottering around the barn, putting away empty feed buckets, and sweeping the aisleway. All of a sudden I heard; “I’m ready” – loud and clear. I curiously decided to walk over to the stall where I felt I heard this communication. To my utter amazement, the horse had finished breakfast and was ready to be turned out for the day. The other horses were all still eating, which supported my amazement that I heard a horse speak. I went on with my day as usual, but a light within me had been switched on.
Over the years I began to feel emotions when around friend’s animal companions, or my own dear companions which included dogs, cats, horses and the occasional mouse who found its way into my kitchen. I would try hard to hear them in the same way I had at the barn that day, but all I would experience was a pit in my stomach and frustration that I couldn’t receive anything from them. I felt the animal’s energy boring in to me to get their message to me and I felt nothing. I would turn to the animal and say: “I know you are trying to tell me something, but I can’t hear you. Can you try another way?” And then I could feel a shift, a change in the attempted connection. I would look at them again and say; “I am so sorry, I still don’t get it.”
I began to work more closely with my horse Echoe (1992-2019). Or more accurately, he began to crack me open and find ways to help me to feel the connection. I learned that any of my senses could be receiving a message and it was for me to find ways to clear whatever was blocking me. It was an arduous task. And yet day by day Echoe was unraveling me and showed me the connection was unique to him and I, and I was to stop comparing myself to how I had seen other people communicate with such ease.
Each of the animals who came in to my life began to show me their unique way of sharing their unconditional love and pure honesty. Dasher would sit further away from me, to show me how to feel his presence. Echoe would soften his body language when I was standing in confidence around him. Sunshine nudged me to play when I got too focused on cleaning the paddock as a task. Their teachings help me to blossom, shed years of self esteem issues and my confidence to share my experiences through voice and writing became stronger every day. I began to see and remember who I was as a child; loving nature, the outdoors and being around animals. I had lost so much of myself over decades of living outside of Nature, working in the City of London in Corporate jobs, and being in relationships that wanted me to show up as anything but who I had been as a child. Now through the love of these animals in my care, I was remembering ME.
The animals showed me through their interactions what kind of mood I was in. If I was feeling impatient, or rushing when
around them, or distracted by thoughts that were creating anxiety in my body, they would act out until I learned that their behavior was actually a reflection of how I was showing up. It was a powerful transition to see how connected we all were. I learned the power within my soul would ignite when I was in a moment of sheer joy, happiness and bliss. This was a time in my life that felt so incredible that I began to shine brightly, stand more confidently, feel a mission blooming, and it came so easily. My friends noticed a difference in my more confident interactions with them, and a new life with my own home in New Hampshire and a business focused on animal health and wellbeing, was emerging.
Every animal I encountered taught me they remain in their truth, they do not try to change or adapt to fit in to my or anyone else’s expectation. The elderly cat’s I adopted from the shelter brought love through touch and funny antics. I learned how unaffected they are by people’s judgment or their perception of how they should be. The dog’s in my life were all hounds; loyal, unconditionally loving, aimed to please, and enjoyed interacting with students who came to our home to study Reiki. And in contrast, I learned how as a human being, I spent my time adjusting who I was to feel accepted, or included in friendship circles.
Since 2008 shelter volunteer work became an important aspect of my focus, and here is where I learned more about animal communication than I could ever have imagined. These animals have been affected by environment, living conditions, abandonment or being mistreated. They will either withdraw into themselves for safety, or lash out to protect, within the confines of their situation. The animals are often confused, stressed, have had all choice taken away, and the people they loved are gone.
The shelter animals taught me how to remain centered, neutral and open to listening deeply so the shelter staff could support them and find them their forever homes. These animals are so tender that a slight shift in my energy, or thoughts would create a bigger response in them due to their already stressed life. When I sat quietly, opened my heart and allowed them the space to share, whether through verbal, visual, sense, feel or knowing. It was always their choice. A beautiful reminder of living in the presence of the animal kingdom.

It’s been quite a journey the last 4 months and I have made major decisions and wish for a very different path going forward. The sheer thought of it is massively liberating. If it hadn’t been for my cat’s dislike of the spirits in the house which you told me about, I would have never called Richard Creightmore to the house to deal with the situation. (He had been once before 14 years ago.) I had to get his number from his website and happened to see that he does an intensive training course once a year. When I saw that, I decided that I simply must do it! Never fails to amaze me how one thing leads to another and we end up where we are meant to be.
